I went a bit soft and mooshy watching a youtube clip today. I guess that's all well and good, except it was over a dog clip. A clip about a Border Collie that could do almost everything bar neurosurgery. Innocent enough really, however what got me was it reminded me how dedicated and loyal our own black and white fur-baby is. She dotes on both of us and spends her life keeping a watchful eye over our daily activities. When I am unwell she doesn't leave my side and during these periods I am often awoken in the night to a cold wet nose just gently nudging me for a second or two.
It seemed fitting after my emotional little outburst today, that Cam and I would go to watch our wedding band The Lamplights perform and there be a dog on the door! Perfectly content in the middle of the doorway the old fellow sat monitoring the coming and going through the doors of the old queensland style pub. He wasn't ungrateful for the attention he received though it appeared, to him, it was more the knowledge that his owner (a member of The Lamps) would return in good time and until then he was happy just to wait it out - even if that meant a chance of being trodden on.
One thing I really love about the Lamplights is their connection to the pieces they play. Even the pieces that aren't original have a meaning to them - they feel and breathe what they do. Tonight in particular they said something that resonated with me "When you are looking for love you need to give it first. Give it without expectation. That is when you will find love." To me that statement couldn't be more true - true love is taking a risk, is giving with an open heart and a willingness to receive nothing in return. Love is risky, love is vulnerable but the best kind of love comes to us when we give of ourselves - just ask your dog!
